About Us
Who we are
The Parish Church of Bath St Stephen is set on a hill in Lansdown on the north slopes of Bath. Famed for its tower and the LED lights that enhance the city's skyscape, St Stephen’s Church is much more than just a building. It is a thriving community of people of all ages who gather together for prayer, fellowship, community engagement and worship. Built by the Victorians of Lansdown and Walcot, St Stephen's has served Bath for a century and a half.
We are a welcoming, child-friendly and inclusive church community made up of people from all backgrounds - on different parts of the Christian journey through life. We are members of the Church of England in the Diocese of Bath and Wells and we are part of the North Bath Local Ministry Group which links us with two other local churches: Charlcombe Parish Church (Blessed Virgin Mary) and Christ Church, Julian Road. We warmly welcome you to join us at one of our regular services.
The Sunday service at 11am each week gathers us together for prayer and the celebration of The Holy Eucharist, with traditional music. Our trained team of childrens' leaders offer children's groups each week during the first part of the 11am service. On the 4th Sunday of the month we have an an all-age service with contemporary music for all the family. We have an active choir that is affiliated to The Royal School of Church Music, and always welcome new voices. We have a new ring of six bells and a band of ringers, and are members of the Bath & Wells Diocesan Association of Change Ringers. We have baptisms (christenings), funerals, weddings and other special celebrations. Our Church School, St Stephen's Church of England VA Primary School, is an important part of our church community. We built it in 1840 and today it has 420 children. As a church we help to govern it through appointing the majority of its governors. The Church Centre and kitchen (below the church building) is home to community and church organisations for children, families, and older people. You can book it for social events.
There is a place for everyone here - and all are welcome.
What are our services like?
Our weekly Sunday service gathers us together for the Liturgy of The Word and Sacrament using Common Worship. The Eucharist (Holy Communion) is at the heart of our parish life.
We have a wonderful choir who lead us in our (usually traditional) hymns. On the fourth Sunday of every month we have a family service when the worship is more informal and contemporary and our children join us for the whole service.
We have coffee and biscuits at the end of each service when all of the congregation can meet and chat. We aim to combine a traditional Church of England service and style of worship with a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for all.

Children matter
During our regular services children from nought upwards are well catered for with their own fun-filled activities, organised by trained and CRB-checked leaders. There is also a dedicated space for little people at the back of church with comfy chairs, toys and children’s books.
Working for sustainability
St Stephen's is a Fairtrade Church. We are also committed to environmental sustainability in all we do, and support the
Diocese of Bath & Wells Environment Policy.
Our Community Wildlife Space (just north of the church) is being created by 16-25 year old volunteers with a generous grant from GreenPrints SITA Trust.
To join the volunteer team please contact the Church Office.
